Monarchs Begin Their NorCal Basketball Championship Run
Congratulations to the varsity men’s and women’s basketball teams for capturing the CCS Divisions II Championships last Friday night at Santa Clara University. The men’s team defeated top ranked St. Francis 56-50, while the women posted a 53-37 over Presentation. The twin victories earned both squads #1 seeds in the upcoming CIF Nor-Cal playoffs, along with a first round bye.

The teams will return to action this Thursday as we play host for a second round Nor-Cal double header. The women will play at 6:00 p.m. against the winner of the Dublin v Bella Vista. The men’s game will follow at 8:00 p.m. with the Monarchs taking on either Pinole Valley or Fairfield. So come on out to the Fien Pavilion and cheer on both teams as they continue on “The Road to State”. Go Monarchs!

Congratulations to head women’s basketball coach Sue Phillips on her 500th career win. Coach Phillips reached the milestone following the team’s 58-30 win over Notre Dame-Belmont in the WCAL playoff semi-final at Bellarmine. Considered as one of the finest high school coaches in America, Phillips' career record now stands at an amazing 500 wins against a mere 81 defeats. Along the way, her Monarch teams have won 23 league crowns, 21 Central Coast Section titles, 8 Nor-Cal championships, and 4 CIF State trophies. Well done Coach Phillips and good luck to the team throughout the rest of the post season.

Congratulations to Senior Alexis Savini who was recently recognized as a candidate for this year's Presidential Scholars competition. Each year the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars and the United States Department of Education recognizes distinguished graduating seniors for their accomplishments in academics, leadership, and service to school and community. It is truly an honor to be invited to participate in this highly selective competition.

Congratulations to Senior Bryce Bajar who was was recently named a recipient of the Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship. This scholarship recognizes seniors for their commitment to community service, academic achievement, and demonstrated leadership.

Congratulations to juniors Varun Agarwal, Amy Steele, Natalie Nguyen, and Gerryl Esperacion who were among 96 juniors selected throughout San Jose and Los Gatos to attend the San Jose Rotary Club's three-day leadership workshop. The workshop is held each spring at Asilomar in Monterey to enhance the leadership qualities of juniors.

Congratulations to seniors Brittany Bozzini and Brian Robles who were selected by the Scholarship Committee to be recognized by the Santa Clara Elks for their overall contribution to the school and wider community.

Congratulations to seniors Bryce Bajar, Kiron Chandy, Emily Chu, Katherine Edgecumbe, Ka-Tung (Karen) Leung, Vijay Mohan, Brian Moriyama, Monica Ortel, Alexis Savini, Josephine Suh, Nicole Tomimatsu, and Olivia Tran who were recently named as finalists in the National Merit 2010 Scholarship Competition based on their scores as juniors on the PSAT. Each year, over 1.5 million juniors across the nation take the PSAT, and from that initial pool, 15,000 are named finalists; that is 1% of all test-takers nationwide. Congratulations on this achievement.

Congratulations to seniors Alexandra Lockwood, Todd McWilliams and Rachel Williams who were recently named Outstanding Participants in the 2010 National Achievement Program based on their PSAT scores from junior year. They are among only 3100 participants in the program who are referred to US colleges and universities for having scored in the top 3% of more than 160,000 African Americans who requested consideration for this program.

Congratulations to Junior Adrienne Eller who received the Children’s Musical Theater of San Jose’s Frank Frye Award. The award is given on a yearly basis to the actor who has given the best vocal performance throughout their season.
